It’s London Fashion Week!

Yes, I know you know this already, after all you’ve been watching the live streams, refreshing Style.com, following specific designers on twitter etc etc

Well guess what? That’s all you really need to do, and one should really only bother to be off-the-moment, that is, try to go to shows/parties when the specific designer is worship worthy… Specifically, the designers that had you uttering ‘I wander what their Fall collection will be like’ five months ago, two minutes after publicly loving their Spring 2010 collection (which you have yet to wear).

Last night PPQ showed their Fall 2010 collection… I know you have yet to wrap your head around the current weather, I know you want to look forward to sun, not think past it, not think about next time it will be this cold. I know this, but still need to share the perfect end to a rainy Saturday, the eight pm slot that allowed you to go dressed up knowing you can move on to a party without a rushed and harassed need to go home and change routine. A collection that you expected to be good, yet did not expect the dresses to make you feel positively, not underdressed so much as… Plain.

Crushed velvet and gold.

I feel the need to make a themed collage not only declaring this a new favourite, but sharing all the various ways it can be played into every outfit, but first I want to share six top looks from the 23 shown:

My girlfriends declared love for the big handbags and uber weird-in-a-good-way shoes, I loved the silhouettes, the coats and the best model casting of London Fashion week so far. The ability to see yourself in an outfit as it comes down the ramp is rare and very distracting.

What do you think?

I never thought I would be one to openly worship at the altar of D & G, but here we are.

As practical and amazing as the Lily bag was, still is, there is an sense of urgency regarding the Jeri, put best by Domenico Dolce in a recent Grazia interview ‘They’re perfect for girls who want to carry around their iPods, phones, lipstick and dance with their hands in the air!’
However, before you start thinking evil fanny pack thoughts, here are a few things to note… This bag is really a body bag. The Jeri’s size works as a functional medium sized body bag one can sling around the body.

The Jeri has multiple front zippers and leather tassles, and like the Lily messenger lots of extra compartments for organizational purposes. The Jeri bag comes in a great orange leather, distressed denim, suede and ocelot printed pony skin variations, for Summer and to avoid handbag conflict, I’m definitely gonna go with distressed denim.

Available for £505 at D&G

The Lily messenger (just in case you have forgotten):

New York, before the recession, was a breeding ground for young designers, overrun with labels that became overnight sensations merely because the industry willed them to be so, a phenomenon that can largely be traced to the example of Zac Posen. Young and connected, he had the attention of important fashion people while he was still a teenager, working as an intern for the designer Nicole Miller and building a network of friends that would include the children of famous artists, magazine editors, actors and PresidentGeorge W. Bush. When Naomi Campbell wore a dress he made — while he was still a student at a London arts college — it seemed as if it was his destiny to become a famous fashion designer. Now young designers think good looks plus diploma equals business plan.

As Mr. Posen put it: “The variables have become pretty clear. Do you feel comfortable having your photo taken? And can you talk, and get sponsorship? I mean, it’s really that crude.”

This is an excerpt of a great article over at the New York Times.

Ironically, I was talking about this last night with my flat-mates… Fashion, showmanship, photographers, fame and sponsorship from backers who may end up owning your name. Then fashion. How much do you want it?

My favourite hot English girl with messy hair Alexa Chung (who you all already know about, so I’m skipping a two line bio) is quickly getting over the recent cancellation of her MTV show by getting back into the fashion business, she has officially become the new face of Pepe Jeans London along with Tom Guinness and Boyd Holbrook.

BUT WAIT! There’s more:

The Perfect Fit: Alexa Chung to Design Collection for Madewell

For many, this will be like hearing the girl everyone wants to date just announce that she’s met her match and that she’s now off the market. Alexa Chung (left), the Brit import who turned up here to work for MTV (despite her show going off the air, she’s still under contract; stay tuned) and Madewell, that purveyor of hip, youthful, and inexpensive Americana, are to join forces. Say it isn’t so! Yes, it is—and we are thrilled.

We can’t imagine that Madewell was the first brand to approach her, asking her to collaborate, consult, or just generally come over and pass on some of that gamine-redux style that she makes look so effortless. Yet Madewell were the perfect suitors because, Chung says, they were so laidback and undesperate. “I’d always been a bit cautious of collaborations—that they’d just be a money thing,” she says. “When I moved to New York, Madewell asked to meet me. I went in, and I liked the company. Everything about our meeting was very organic and casual; not full-on. They were open to suggestions.”

Chung had known about Madewell from her friend Jim, an American ex-roommate from her London days, who also just happened to be working for the brand. He called her up one day to tell her that her image was all over Madewell’s inspiration boards. She returned the compliment, buying its smock dresses and preppie blazers: “the kinds of things,” she says, “I love to wear.”

The first pieces from the collection will be available this September, and will be sold under the label Alexa Chung for Madewell. “Pretty original, huh?” she says, laughing. “I’d wanted to call it Better than a Poke in the Eye [a Britishism for “better than nothing”], but I think we’ll save that for the buttons on the jeans.” So, denim, then? “Yeah, because it is a big thing for them. We’re doing dungaree dresses.” The design directive she gave to herself was: “Things my girlfriends would wear, and say, ‘That’s sick!’ ” Expect high-waisted pants and jeans, velvet dresses with Peter Pan collars, and a coat based on a vintage children’s one she found that originally came from Harrods. There will be nothing that nods to the eighties or nineties, because she’s not into either decade. “I want to bring back forties tea dresses, sixties mod dresses. . . . I want to bring cute back.” If she means cute of the non-saccharine, supercool variety, she already has.

—Mark Holgate for Vogue.com
